Desert Plants, Succulents & Tropicals

Desert & Tropical plants are the perfect urban companion. They are also about the simplest entertainment you can discover! They thrive in any environment and are especially happy when you forget to water them! If you do care for them in the way they like, they will surprise you with a whimsical flower, a waterfall of foliage and color, an interesting growth pattern.

What I like about plants that grow in desert conditions is that they bloom when you least expect them to. These are plants that are easy to get along with and require little attention and return wonderful gifts like a whimsical growth pattern or a pretty flower. This used to be an offering at market but with our expansion, I sold the last of my deserts and tropical plants in 2010. I am keeping these pages here for those who continue to visit them!

Crassula - 'Red Devil'
This succulent quickly forms a dense ground cover of tiny bright green rosettes, that are 4 to 5 inches in diameter. Sometimes they will sprout yellow flowers. It likes sun/part sun and can go long periods of time without watering, though I water mine about once ever two weeks. This this plant is a native of South Africa and Madagascar.

Kalanchoe - 'Paddle Plant'
This succulent comes from South Africa and forms large paddles on a tall growing spear like stem. This is a plant that might need to be supported with a stake when it reaches maturity. It can get 4 feet tall if you let it with paddles getting as large as 6 inches. It prefers filtered sun and likes to be in a pot that has good drainage. It doesn't like to sit in water.

Begonia - 'Angel Wing' & 'Dragon-Wing'
Not your typical begonia, it is a cross between the angel wing variety and wax varieties and combines the best qualities of both. Beautiful compact plant that will treat you to pink bleeding-heart like flowers periodically if it likes the conditions. Give them filtered sun in winter but partial shade during other seasons. A light fibrous soil is best. Tolerates slight drying between watering.

Nemantanthus 'Goldfish plant'
This plant eventually becomes a trailing evergreen that becomes woody at the bases. It is from tropical rainforest areas in South America. A copper leafed plant that produces large numbers of orange flowers that looks like the "Goldfish" cracker. It needs a fairly open planting medium that is allowed to dry somewhat between waterings. Bright light - avoid direct sunshine. Keep fairy cool in winter minimum temperature 55-60 F. Ideal temperatures are between 65 and 80 F. Water freely from spring to autumn - sparingly in winter.

Anacampseros Retusa - 'Love Plant'
A small perennial succulent native to South Africa. The love Plant form rosettes of smooth or hairy, fleshy leaves, which may be lance-shaped or almost round. These small plants can reach a height of up to 6 inches when mature. They need full sun to partial shade, with a well-drained soil mix. The 2 inch (5 cm) rose-purple flowers open in late afternoon and close in early evening. The flat, wheel-shaped flowers grow intermittently throughout the year, but mostly in the summer. They open in the afternoon . The flowers range in color from white to pale purple.

Sempervivum Arachnoideum -
'Cobweb Hens & Chicks'

Perennial succulent herbs that grow in very tight rosettes. Each rosette may have up to 50-60 leaves. The rosettes reache up to 2 inches diameter and clumps can reach several feet across with age. The tips of the leaves are connected with thin cobwebby hairs. In Europe, the plants are sometimes used in roofing, with the plants grown in between roofing tiles; they are believed to ward off lightening. Plants are very easy to grow in container or in the rock garden. Most species are hardy in USDA zones 6-11.

Asteraceae senecio radicans -
'String of bananas'

Native to South Africa, is commonly known as the "String of Bananas". Member of the Aster family. Stems have emerald green banana-shaped leaves with translucent "windows". Flowers are like pom-poms of many tiny white flowers and are fragrant. Quickly forms plush hanging baskets. Thrives in a bright room or with morning sun on a patio in temperate areas. Porous soil with adequate drainage. Bright light with ample airflow. Water thoroughly when soil is dry to the touch. Less water during winter months.

Sedum divergens - 'Old Man's Bones'
This native North American species forms a low carpet of fleshy, rounded green leaves, spreading to form a thick patch. Clusters of bright yellow star flowers appear in summer. A fast grower and a good choice for tubs and mixed containers.

Senecio ‘Mini Blue’ - Blue Chalk Fingers
A spreading succulent from South Africa that grows to 12"-18" tall with 3"-4" long blue gray pencil-like fleshy leaves and small white flowers in mid-summer. Forms a dense mat with leaves angled upward from the ground. Drought tolerant but tolerates regular irrigation. Plant in full sun to light shade. A great groundcover with an unusual blue glow.

Sederveria ‘Robert Grimm’
This plant forms rambling, clustering plants. They prefer very porous soil. Drench them well and allow the soil to dry somewhat between waterings. They enjoy cool summer conditions, good light, and good air circulation. High heat in the summer will often cause lower leaves to drop.

Portulacaria afra - Elephant Bush
Native to South Africa. It i s known as" Spekboom" by native Africans. In the bush, they will reach 12 feet in height with an equal spread. A group of elephants can quickly strip all the leaves and smaller branches in a single feeding, but the growth rate of this plant is so great that within two weeks the branches will have regrown lush new greenery. Elephant bush can provide up to 80%of the elephant's diet.

In containers, they will stay much smaller and their size is easily controlled with selective pruning and pot size. The attractive reddish-brown stems with dark green leaves make a great bonsai plant. Clusters of small, pink flowers form. This plant likes full sun and good drainage.

Portulacaria afra 'Variegata' - Rainbow Bush
Is a form of the South African "Elephant Bush". A shrubby plant with mahogany-colored stems that are accented by highly succulent yellow leaves with green midstripes. The growth of this plant differs from the "Elephant Bush" in that it is cascading and spreads quickly laterally, than vertically. Often used as a bonsai subject because the the stems are easily trained, and the contrast of the gnarly mahogany stems with the delicate round colorful leaves is quite stunning. Bright light.
